Accessibility statement

Built for every reader — with an accessibility toolbar on every page.

Accessibility isn't a feature of this site — it's the point of it. Dyslexia Institute is committed to a website that works for everyone, including people with dyslexia, low vision, motor differences, and those using assistive technology.

Our accessibility toolbar

Every page includes an accessibility toolbar — the round green icon at the bottom-left of your screen. It offers:

  • Text reader — reads the page (or your selected text) aloud with highlighting.
  • Language translator — translate the site into dozens of languages.
  • Picture dictionary — double-click any word for a definition, a visual cue, and audio.
  • Audio recorder — capture voice notes instead of writing.
  • Screen mask — a reading ruler that follows your cursor and dims distractions.
  • Text magnifier — hover to see enlarged text in a lens.
  • Page simplifier — a distraction-free reading view.
  • Dyslexia-friendly font, extra spacing, and larger text — remembered between visits.

Standards we build to

  • WCAG 2.2 Level AA as our target standard
  • Semantic HTML with proper landmarks, headings, and alt text
  • Full keyboard operability, visible focus indicators, and a skip link
  • Dyslexia-informed defaults: high-legibility fonts (Lexend, Atkinson Hyperlegible), generous line spacing, off-white backgrounds, and left-aligned text
  • Respect for prefers-reduced-motion

Known limitations

Some tools rely on your browser's capabilities (speech synthesis, microphone access) and third-party services (Google Translate, dictionary definitions), which may vary by device or connection.
