Walk through any app store and you'll find hundreds of programs promising to teach your child to read — gamified, adaptive, colorful, and endorsed by someone. Walk into an effective intervention room and you'll find something older: letter tiles being pushed into columns, a child's finger tracing a letter in sand while saying its sound, words being built and unbuilt by hand on a table. With global reading scores at record lows and screens the leading suspect, parents keep asking us where we stand on technology and learning to read. So here is our position, plainly: for building the foundations of reading — letter knowledge, sound-symbol mapping, spelling, handwriting — default to hands-on, paper-and-object teaching, and treat apps as a supplement, never the delivery vehicle. This isn't nostalgia. It's what the evidence, and a century of structured-literacy practice, both say.

Why has dyslexia teaching always been multisensory?

Structured literacy — the approach with the strongest evidence base for dyslexic learners — has been multisensory since its Orton-Gillingham roots in the 1930s: see the letter, say the sound, feel the mouth make it, write the shape by hand. The International Dyslexia Association lists engagement of multiple senses among structured literacy's core teaching principles. The logic is that reading is not a purely visual act; it's a circuit connecting print, speech sounds, meaning, and motor memory, and for a child whose sound-processing wiring is the weak link, every additional pathway helps the connection stick. Moving a tile for each sound in "ship" makes phonemes — invisible, abstract, slippery — into objects a six-year-old can literally get her hands on. An app can show the same tiles, but a touchscreen tap is not the same act as gripping, sliding, and placing, and most apps quietly drop the speaking and handwriting legs of the circuit entirely.

What does the research say about handwriting?

That it earns its place. A widely covered 2024 study from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology recorded brain activity in students writing by hand versus typing, and found handwriting produced far more elaborate connectivity patterns across the brain regions associated with learning and memory — the authors argue the careful forming of letters, using more of the senses, is precisely what makes it stick. (Some researchers have challenged aspects of that study's interpretation, so hold the neuroscience loosely — but it joins a consistent body of work associating letter formation by hand with stronger letter learning in young children.) For dyslexic students the practical version is simple: spelling a word aloud while writing it by hand rehearses the full sound-to-print circuit; swiping a word tile rehearses swiping. Is reading on a screen really worse?

For the reading that school runs on — yes, measurably, though modestly. A meta-analysis of dozens of studies (Delgado and colleagues, 2018) found a consistent "screen inferiority" effect for reading comprehension, concentrated in informational texts and worse under time pressure; a second meta-analysis (Clinton, 2019) reached the same conclusion. Researchers call the leading explanation the shallowing hypothesis: screens train rapid, fragmented interaction — skim, scroll, hop — and that habit follows the reader into any text on the device. We'll be honest about the edges of the evidence, because that's our house style: the effect is an average, not a law; it's smaller for narrative reading; and some studies of the very youngest readers don't find it at all. But when the foundations are being poured, "the default medium measurably favors shallower processing" is not a coin flip. Print the passage.

So should dyslexic kids avoid screens?

No — and this is the distinction we most want families to carry away. Instruction is teaching a child to decode print; that's where hands-on wins. Access is getting knowledge, stories, and written expression flowing while decoding is still under construction — and there, technology is not a compromise, it's a civil right. Audiobooks build the vocabulary and knowledge that comprehension rides on. Speech-to-text frees ideas from the spelling bottleneck. Text-to-speech puts grade-level content within reach. The families who get this right run both tracks at once: intervention that's tactile, explicit, and human — and a device loaded with accommodations doing the access job. What they don't do is let an app impersonate the intervention.

The hands-on starter kit at home

  1. Letter tiles or magnetic letters. Build words, swap one sound at a time (map → mop → top), say each sound while moving its tile. Ten minutes does real work.
  2. Sand, salt tray, or carpet writing. Trace the letter large while saying its sound — the classic multisensory move, free and portable.
  3. Pencil and paper for spelling practice. Say the word, segment the sounds aloud, write it by hand, check it. Keyboard practice can come after the pattern is learned.
  4. Printed decodable books. Practice on paper, with books matched to the patterns your child has been taught (our decodables guide).
  5. One shared paper book a day. The companion habit that carries everything else — here's the routine.

What to avoid

  • Apps as the reading program. No app currently substitutes for explicit, responsive teaching — a skilled adult adjusting to your child's errors in real time is the intervention.
  • Screens-are-evil absolutism. Refusing your child text-to-speech or audiobooks in the name of "real reading" withholds access while decoding catches up. Both tracks, always.
  • "Reading practice" that's really guessing practice. Games rewarding speed and streaks push children toward guessing — the exact habit structured literacy exists to replace.
  • Buying the cure. Any product claiming to "fix" or "rewire" dyslexia in weeks — app or otherwise — has left the evidence behind. Our intervention guide lists the questions that expose it.

Frequently asked questions

Are reading apps bad for kids with dyslexia? Used as a supplement — extra practice on skills a teacher has explicitly taught — good apps are harmless and sometimes helpful. Used as the primary instruction, they're a poor substitute: they rarely include speaking and handwriting, can't diagnose the cause of an error, and deliver practice on a medium associated with shallower reading.

Why do letter tiles work better than the same tiles on a tablet? Physical manipulation recruits motor and spatial systems alongside sight and sound, slows the task to the speed of thought, and removes the tap-swipe habits screens train. The tablet version keeps the visual but drops most of the rest — and multisensory engagement is a core structured-literacy principle for a reason.

Is homework on a screen a problem too? For a struggling reader, printed text is the safer default for anything requiring careful comprehension, and paper-and-pencil the default for spelling and writing practice — while text-to-speech and dictation should stay available as accommodations for volume and access. It's the same rule everywhere: hands-on to learn the code, tech to reach the content.
