For a decade, the dyslexia conversation in the UK — as in the US — focused on access: getting words off the page through decoding instruction, assistive technology, and exam accommodations. That work is far from finished, but the field's leading voices are already framing the next frontier. Why is the conversation shifting now?
Because the first battle is partially won, and winning it exposed the second. - Teach comprehension explicitly, too. Summarizing, questioning, and inference respond to instruction just as phonics does — especially for students who spent their early years locked out of the practice everyone else got.
- Watch for the quiet profile. A student who decodes adequately but understands thinly can pass screenings while struggling badly. Comprehension-focused assessment catches what accuracy scores miss.
- Keep the accommodations. "They can decode now" is not a reason to remove audio access — speed and stamina matter for understanding, and accommodations protect both.
Why should families outside the UK care?
Because the UK is running a preview of everyone's next decade. The US is mid-wave on screening and structured-literacy laws (all 50 states now have them); as those laws produce more students who can decode, the comprehension question arrives on schedule. Families and schools that build both pillars from the start — decoding intervention plus rich language exposure — won't have to relearn the lesson later. The takeaway travels well: read to them, let them listen without limits, talk about everything, and treat understanding, not accuracy, as the finish line.
